For my project, I'm building a Focke-Wulf FW190 Model A6, flown by Hauptmann Anton "Toni" Hackl, Stab III/JG 11 at Oldenburg, Germany around December to February 1944. There's a lot of "controversy" as to what exactly the plane looked like. Major Hackl flew a number of planes, and his Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6 is well known. One can only infer as to what exactly the A6 would look like based on this plane. The folks from Aeromaster decal company actually have something interesting to say, and I quote: "Gray-Green RLM 74 and Gray-Violet RLM 75 upper surfaces with Blue-Gray RLM 76 undersides. The Yellow RLM 04 fuselage band identified JG 11 as a Reich Defense Unit. The white rudder displays Hackl's Oak Leaves award and 141 of his eventual total of 192 air victories. We were able to get photos of Hackl's A/C thanks to Dr. Kashiro Nagao in Japan. This A/C has been illustrated in many ways before but this is the way it probably looked.... "
I am going to make use of the fact that a lot of people still believe that the swastika was over sprayed. This will keep my wife happy... The basic colours to use are RLM 04, 02, 75, and 76. Spinner to be painted in RLM 70 and have some miscellaneous colours. There has been lots written about the exact colour representation for aircraft at this stage of the war. refer to Hyperscale's excellent papers on this subject. Paint system For this project I will use Testor's Model Master Acrylic Federal Standards Colour code, wherever listed, as a cross-reference.
For this project, I'll use Testors Acrylic paints for the cockpit area, and the Nelson's System Three paints for the exterior. For the cockpit I will need the following colours:
I'll use Tower Hobbies to order these paints. There are some very good reference sites for RLM and determining accurate RLM colours: In the "Details" section of Scale Aero Web-zine. There's also a good discussion on the use of RLM and it's confusion today. In the Archive of Hyperscale Web-site. And there's more... I picked up a nice book called "Walkaround FW190D" by Squadron Signal Publications. They have a nice section on what they believe the various RLM colours are and the equivalent FS numbers. Nice book... Maybe a D9 or D13 as my next project... Hmmmmm....
